Back tattoos are easy to hide
Back tattoos are easily hideable. If you are conscious about it, you can hide a back tattoo very easily by wearing a t-shirt. So, if you want to sort of look tattooed but you also want to be able to hide it easily, then a big back piece is a way to go. I have known many tattoo artists who don’t look tattooed, but they have their backs covered.
Back tattoo designs
The back offers a massive canvas. You can put almost any design you want on the back because it provides a flat surface and a lot of room for your artwork. Portraits look stunning on the back whether they are side-facing or front-facing, you can add so much detail there.
It is also an easier area for tattoo artists to work with because the back is not curved like an arm or your other body parts.
You can also have small individual tattoos on your back. I’ve seen a lot of those as well. Either way, big or small, it doesn’t matter. I think they both look good on the back. My personal preference is big back tattoos that are high in detail or have a lot going on to them, but again I like a small little back tattoo, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I think the back is the best place to get something creative or a huge custom piece.
Back tattoos last longer
Like the side tattoos, back tattoos age a little bit slower than an arm tattoo or a hand or a neck tattoo. That’s just because most of your back is always covered up most of the time, and the sun doesn’t get to it that often. That is why they age slower than an arm tattoo or hand tattoo or wherever you have tattoos that are out on the show. So if you want a very colorful back tattoo, it’s guaranteed to last longer and will look good for longer.
Back tattoo pain
Back tattoos are pretty painful. On a scale of 1-10, I’d say a back tattoo is anywhere from seven to nine, maybe ten. They’re not an easy tattoo to go through. I wouldn’t suggest getting a back tattoo as a first tattoo unless it’s a small one, but obviously, it’s up to you. You know your own body, and if you think you can handle it, that’s fine, but back tattoos are pretty painful. The most painful parts for me was down the spine area and down in the middle near the rib cage area.
How long does it take to get a back tattoo?
A full-back tattoo can take quite a long time. If you have a palm-sized tattoo, then obviously it won’t take that long, but if you’re having quite a big back piece or a full back piece, it can take hours upon hours and sessions upon sessions to finish. Be mindful that if you’re going to get an entire back piece, it takes a long time to do, and you cannot rush it.
Healing
Back tattoos are incredibly hard to heal. Not because of the way they’re done or anything, it’s just the position of the tattoo. It is tricky to clean the tattoo and apply healing cream, especially between the shoulder blades. If possible, use Saniderm to heal your tattoo or if you have people around you, you can easily use a tattoo ointment of whichever you prefer like Tattoo goo or Hustle Tattoo Butter and then just put a film over it.
Sleeping isn’t fun for the first two-three days and very uncomfortable as you don’t know where to lay. It will be very uncomfortable to lie on your back for 2-3 days because you don’t realize how much you use your back until you get a back tattoo. I recommend maybe taking a couple of days off from work if you’re having a big back piece. If you’re getting a small one, then you’ll be fine.
